industrial design

The journey from inception to the market is complex, and a significant investment. That is why it is so important that your product’s exceptional qualities are communicated effectively to your customers. Excellent industrial design not only improves the aesthetics, usability, and manufacturability but also communicates emotional attributes, telling a story that builds the brand.

director, James Lamb

James Lamb has a BSc in Industrial Design from Brunel University. James was one of the very first design engineers at Dyson, starting with the company when it was still based in the legendary garden shed in 1992.

He went on to consultancy with Random Product Design before becoming a founding Director of The Alloy in 1999. Between 2006 and 2010 James jointly ran The Product Works. He set up Lamb Industries in 2011 in Bath, Somerset.

James co-ran the DfM (Design for Manufacture) platform on the Design Products course at the Royal College of Art. He is a visiting lecturer at his alma mater, Brunel University, where he also served as the Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Innovation. He has lectured at numerous prestigious universities in Europe and the UK.

values

Our core philosophy is to design products that look better, work better and feel truly authentic to your brand. We work to deliver designs that satisfy our clients at all levels of their company, from engineering and manufacturing to marketing and commercial. We work collaboratively with your internal teams to understand your business’s priorities and brand values, informing our design direction. And our design values underpin all this…

experience…

We have on our team decades of experience in an extraordinary variety of sectors and products. This includes construction, garden tools, domestic products and equipment for surgeons and firefighters. The extensive knowledge and experience that we bring are constantly informing creative solutions in new areas for us.

knowledge…

We create a design rationale for all products, and work collaboratively with your teams on our designs. But we also offer industrial design training for teams so they can apply this to future products, and Corporate Product Design guides to create a unique consistent design language for your company.

simplicity…

The best designs really are those where you cannot take anything else away. They use minimal material and are easy to understand, use, maintain, and repair. They’re both elegant and efficient. Designing products that are beautiful to behold and to use is a challenge, but it’s part of what makes our work enjoyable.

storytelling…

Good design intuitively communicates its purpose, a product should work exactly as it looks like it should. It also speaks about your brand values at a physical and emotional level in an immediate, visceral way. It uses considered and meaningful visual features to tell a story. A story that builds your brand narrative.

reliability…

We have a strong track record in creating appealing designs that are reproduced without compromise or dilution, so you will only see exciting designs that you can realise. We collaborate with all stakeholders in the design process and see engineers and manufacturers as allies - not threats to our creativity.

research…

We work hard to understand the unmet needs of the consumer, undertaking in-depth consumer research, and translating this into meaningful and useful designs. An understanding of the product’s lifecycle, and the user’s relationship with it, creates long lasting designs that make your products a joy to live with.

responsibility…

We think carefully about the impact and value of every project. Our designs are long lasting and easily maintained, considering materials, processes and efficiency in operation. We design products that people build relationships with and want to use for a long time. We take our responsibility as designers seriously.

flexibility…

Every project is different. This is evident from the breadth of our work. We have a robust design process but we recognise that each new engagement may need a different approach. We are confident enough to tailor our collaboration to give the best outcomes for every client.

inclusivity…

Everyone is different. Our designs will be used by a wide variety of individuals. Accessibility means understanding and incorporating the needs of all users. Indeed, specific requirements are often a chance to make better designs for everyone.
